Carson Wentz to Start for Vikings Against Bills as Kyler Murray Sidelined

Carson Wentz will take over as the starting quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings when they face the Buffalo Bills on Monday night. Head coach Kevin O'Connell announced the quarterback change in a Thursday afternoon press conference following a hamstring strain suffered by Kyler Murray. The team considers Murray week-to-week, elevating Wentz to the starting role with Max Brosmer stepping in as the backup.

Elite Defense Seeks Offensive Stability

The Vikings hold a 6-1 record but are coming off their first loss of the season, a 19-15 road defeat to the Detroit Lions. While Minnesota's defense has been dominant, ranking first in the NFL in opponent points allowed (13.3 per game) and second in opponent yards (271.6 per game), the offense has struggled to find a consistent rhythm.

Minnesota currently ranks 31st in passing yards (165.6 per game) and 29th in total yards (279.4 per game). The rushing attack sits at 17th with 113.9 yards per game, contributing to a scoring offense that ranks 27th, averaging just 20.0 points per contest. Wentz will be tasked with managing this unit against the Bills, relying on his experience to protect the football and complement the top-tier defense.

O'Connell Confident in Wentz's Experience

This Monday night matchup will mark Wentz's second start of the season and his seventh start for the Vikings over the last two seasons. Across his two appearances this year, Wentz has completed 59.0% of his passes for 276 yards, three passing touchdowns, and zero interceptions, earning a 106.4 passer rating.

O'Connell expressed strong belief in his backup quarterback's ability to step in seamlessly.

"We have so much confidence in Wentz," O'Connell said. "He's going to throw a lot of completions. He's going to put the ball in play. He's got such a high, high understanding of not only the offense, but what he's looking at on the other side. He's got 100 games of experience."

The head coach emphasized that Wentz's background makes him the ideal candidate to navigate the current injury situation.

"He's the perfect guy in a moment where you can't have Kyler out there at full strength to go in there, and we feel very strongly about when Carson's in there, we're going to get really effective quarterback play," O'Connell added.

Murray Sidelined Again

Murray's hamstring strain adds to a frustrating season of interruptions for the starting quarterback, who previously missed Week 2 with a concussion suffered in the Vikings' season opener. Before this latest setback, Murray had totaled 1,022 passing yards, five passing touchdowns, and three interceptions with an 86.6 passer rating. He completed 64.9% of his passes and added 167 rushing yards.

With Murray week-to-week, the Vikings will rely on Wentz to steer the offense through a critical Monday night test against Buffalo, hoping to secure their seventh win of the season.
