Garrett Wilson Enters Concussion Protocol Before Jets-Chiefs Game
The New York Jets could be without their leading receiver on Sunday after Garrett Wilson was placed in the NFL's concussion protocol.
New York Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson has entered the NFL concussion protocol, casting uncertainty on his availability for Sunday's game against the Kansas City Chiefs. Head coach Aaron Glenn said Wednesday that the team's leading receiver is considered day to day.
Late-Game Hit and Protocol Entry
Wilson was injured in the closing moments of New York's 38-33 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders last Sunday. The receiver took a helmet-to-helmet hit from Raiders safety Jeremy Chinn on a 15-yard catch, a collision that resulted in Chinn being called for unnecessary roughness.
Despite the heavy contact, Wilson stayed in the game. On the very next play, quarterback Geno Smith targeted Wilson in the end zone, but Chinn intercepted the pass. According to Glenn, Wilson came to the team facility on Monday feeling some effects from the hit and was subsequently placed in the concussion protocol.
Statistical Impact on the Jets Offense
The Jets have a 2-6 record and have dropped three games in a row, making Wilson's potential absence a significant hurdle. Wilson has been the focal point of the passing attack, logging 43 catches for 527 yards and three touchdowns this season. His 43 receptions are tied for the most in the AFC and rank ninth in the NFL, while his 63 targets are second in the conference.
Against the Raiders, Wilson secured six receptions for 83 yards on a team-high 12 targets. It is currently uncertain whether entering the concussion protocol will impact Wilson's reported status as potential trade bait ahead of the deadline.
Roster Adjustments and Injury Updates
If Wilson is unable to clear protocol, New York will have to lean on other playmakers against a Chiefs team coming off a 28-24 road loss to the Denver Broncos. Adonai Mitchell recently stepped up, recording seven catches for a career-high 142 yards and a touchdown against the Raiders in his second game back from a finger injury.
The Jets' offense could also receive reinforcements in the backfield. Running back Breece Hall could return after missing the last five games with a quadriceps injury and will be limited at practice. Meanwhile, the team is managing several other health concerns, as tight end Mason Taylor, edge rusher David Bailey (groin), and edge rusher Joseph Ossai (ankle) are all dealing with injuries.
