William Contreras World Series MVP honor caps historic Brewers breakthrough

William Contreras celebrating after the Milwaukee Brewers won the World Series against the Tampa Bay Rays

William Contreras World Series MVP honors went to the Milwaukee Brewers catcher on Oct. 29, 2026, after Milwaukee beat the Tampa Bay Rays 4-1 in Game 5 to win the series. The victory delivered the first championship in Brewers franchise history and completed a postseason defined by control, timely production and a catcher at the center of it.

Contreras, 28, went 1-for-4 with an RBI double in the clincher and finished the World Series 8-for-21, a .381 average, with four RBIs. The award also placed him in rare company among catchers and Venezuelan players on baseball’s biggest stage.

A catcher joins a short World Series MVP list

Contreras is the first catcher to win World Series MVP since Salvador Pérez in 2015. He also became the third Venezuelan to win the award, following Pérez and San Francisco’s Pablo Sandoval in 2012.

The honor came after a series in which Contreras made an impact beyond the batter’s box. He threw out four runners in the triumph over Tampa Bay, including three in the first three games. That made him the first catcher to do that since Phillies catcher Darren Daulton in 1993.

Contreras also had 10 successful ABS challenges during the series, adding another layer to his influence behind the plate. Milwaukee’s pitching staff held the Rays to 12 runs in five games, with Contreras guiding the group through the championship round.

Milwaukee closes out its first championship

The Brewers entered Game 5 with a chance to secure a long-awaited title and did so with a 4-1 win over Tampa Bay. It was the franchise’s first championship and changed the ending to a World Series history that had previously included only a seven-game loss to St. Louis in 1982.

Milwaukee’s finish was part of a dominant October. The Brewers went 11-2 in the postseason, including a sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL Championship Series before defeating the Rays in five games.

For a franchise that had waited decades for a title, the clincher turned Contreras’ individual award into part of a larger milestone. His RBI double in Game 5 added to a series résumé that already included steady hitting and game-changing defense.

A year of titles for Contreras

Contreras’ 2026 also included a World Baseball Classic championship with Venezuela in March. He played four games in the tournament, while Salvador Pérez started the final at catcher as Venezuela beat the United States 3-2 in Miami for its first WBC title.

His brother, Willson Contreras, was also on the Venezuela roster. By the end of October, William Contreras had added a World Series championship and World Series MVP award to that international success.

The regular season set up his October run. Contreras hit .270 with 18 homers, 94 RBIs and a .758 OPS in 147 games before becoming Milwaukee’s most consistent hitter in the postseason.

October numbers backed the vote

Contreras finished the postseason with a .373/.448/.588 slash line, three homers and nine RBIs. In the World Series alone, he hit .381 with four RBI while also controlling the running game against Tampa Bay.

Those numbers gave the Brewers a steady presence at a premium position throughout their title run. By the end of Game 5, they also gave Contreras a place alongside Pérez and Sandoval in Venezuelan World Series MVP history — and alongside the rare catchers who have taken home the award.
